“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – unknown

This quote immediately made me think of Josie.  She is full of confidence and is beautiful inside and out.  She knows that beauty doesn’t just lie in the makeup or clothes she wears.  She is beautiful no matter what she wears, and she knows that, which I love!  She loves playing volleyball and could quite possibly be a model some day.

I had the opportunity to photograph Josie almost exactly two years ago right before her 16th birthday.  You can see those pictures HERE.  This year her shoot was right before her 18th birthday, I can hardly believe how fast time goes by!

We had so much fun at the marina with her cousin and a friend, just laughing, and joking, and enduring the freezing cold wind and even some rain.  You wouldn’t be able to tell that Josie was freezing during all of these pictures from the smile on her face!

Thank you Josie for letting me have the opportunity to capture you’re beauty again.

Beautiful B&W – I Heart Faces Challenge

Beauty is in the heart of the beholder - H.G. Wells

These boys are and always will be in my heart.  This is just one beautiful moment captured in our daily life.  A moment where my boys were playing together, on a day where we wore pajamas all day long, my favorite kind of day, my favorite kind of moment.  Beauty in my eyes, and heart.  Them just being them.  That coupled with the beauty of instant film.  It makes my heart happy.

Now go out and find the beauty in your life, and don’t forget to visit “I Heart Faces” for more beautiful black and white entries!

Harvard and Rose

Harvard and Rose have been married for more than sixty years, have 8 children, 6 boys and 2 girls, and over 60 grandchildren.  He is an athlete, lawyer, senator, and father.  She is a supportive housewife, mother, writer, and lover of languages.  They love traveling the world together and lived several years out of the country.  But Lehi, UT will always be home to them.  This house they’ve lived in for almost fifty years.  That mural painted on the wall.  The high school and view of the mountains from their front window.  The small town that’s not quite so small anymore.  I loved how relaxed they were as I followed them around, they were just being them, doing what they do, and loving each other.

Harvard and Rose are my grandparents, my father’s parents.  Their home is full of memories for me as well.  Growing up we moved several times and this home is one of the few places where I have memories throughout my entire life.  I wanted to be able to capture some of those memories for me, my grandparents, my parents, my aunts, uncles, cousins, and my children.  So I used half a roll of film to document a day in their life.  My only regret is that I didn’t take more.  The next time I visit Utah I’m planning on spending more time, and more film, to capture more of the house, and even some of George the cat.  I’m also planning on doing the same with my other Grandma, my mother’s mother.

I want to make it a personal project of mine to document the grandparents/parents in everyone’s lives, they each have such a story to tell.  I even told my husband that I’m going to plan a trip to Colorado so that I can document his grandparent’s life, if they’ll agree to it.

If you’re interested in being a part of my project and would like to book a “Grandparent Session” at a discounted rate either in the Seattle area,  Utah County or the Cincinnati area this year please contact me at puzzlepiecephotography@gmail.com.  I would love to see what kind of story others have to tell.

Right after Sarah’s bridal shower I was able to go take formals of the happy couple.  It started out with a “first look” where I was able to capture when they saw each other all dressed up for the first time.  I love the emotion in these photos, and how you can tell just how much they adore each other.  The location also brought back a lot of memories for me, it’s where I had my bridal photos taken six years ago.

The sun had already started going down by the time Sarah had her dress on, but we had a little light yet, when we ran out we moved to a ballroom because they love dancing together.  Most of these were taken with kodak portra 400 and ilford 3200 film, only a few were digital.  The ilford 3200 is a grainy black and white film that has a romantic quality to it.  Don’t you think?  :)

Ryan, Jen, and Eleanor

When I first got to Utah, right before Thanksgiving I was able to meet my cousin Ryan’s beautiful baby Eleanor for the first time.  Ryan and I are almost exactly the same age (I beat him by a few months) and grew up together.  It’s so fun to see him as a daddy now, and little Eleanor absolutely adores him.  I’m so glad he found Jen, and I love them all to pieces!  Aren’t they the most adorable family you’ve ever seen?  These photos were taken in my grandparent’s backyard in the middle of the day, right before we all pitched in to rake up the massive amount of leaves pictured.  It was absolutely freezing, so we only kept little Eleanor out there for about ten minutes, but that was all we needed.

I do admit I may not have helped much with the leaf raking due to my condition (pictured below), but I did pick up a few walnuts that had fallen off of their tree, then I went inside and ate them.  The baby needed it, at least that’s what I’ll keep telling myself.  ;)  He was born exactly a week later!
